Our Contemplation in Honor of Black History Month

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” ~Maya Angelou

The three of us (Dawn, Mecca and Shawn) are American women who live our days in white bodies, and have received the privileges that come with being white in the U.S.

With the humility that comes from not truly knowing another’s struggles yet caring deeply and choosing to do what we can to heal the past and create a loving present and future, we honor Black History Month.

One of the main reasons we created New World Women was so that ALL women (and consequently ALL people) and not just select groups, can live feeling respected, fruitful in their endeavors, joyful, loved and abundant.

We know that we cannot create and live in the new world we envision, doing things the old way.

It’s okay (and expected) to be uncomfortable when discussing the hard facts of enslavement and racism of Black/African American people.

Let’s speak the truth of what really happened historically and listen to stories/experiences of our Black sisters and brothers. This is how we learn. This is how we grow. This is how we become better. This is how we heal.

With a joyful, heartfelt appreciation and love for Black/African American people, may we all see our oneness. Truly, there is no “other.” There is always us.

The Hawaiian prayer, Ho'oponopono, expresses what's in our hearts for our Black/African American sisters and brothers:

"I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you."

I'm sorry: We express remorse and take responsibility for our actions.
Please forgive me: We ask for forgiveness and acknowledge the harm that was caused.
Thank you: We express gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to reconcile and make amends.
I love you: We express love and understanding, and commit to moving forward in a positive way.

In service to a new world of love and respect for all,
